Final images for brief 1: Appropriation

These images explore the theme of Surrealism, and psychedelia these three images started off as fashion photography and I decided that I wanted to go down this track with the images. I feel that they represent the different stylings in this area of photography and have been thoroughly appropriated from their original meanings. they also show a wide range of tools from photoshop and demonstrate what I can do with a short period of time for a brief, if I was to do these again I would probably go and photograph flowers or scan them to get more detail and realism into the surreal, paint on the top image and burn the middle image and scan into photoshop to get a destroyed effect which would work quite well.

Appropriation

When I first heard about the brief I thought about doing something on fashion, creating an image of the person repeated over and over to show that fashion isn’t individual anymore. With everyone copying off of each other, stealing designs and creating the same thing with a different label. This idea seemed to work quite well but, I didn’t think this showed much of what I could do or have a high enough level for this brief or university in general.

I scrapped that idea after that one image I edited, I went on to google different techniques such as overpainting, and surrealism, the latter of which ended up being what these pieces are based upon. I feel that the pieces I have presented in this collection are really strong, and show the theme of surrealism really well.  Using my skills in Photoshop I have created the three images the first being made with a collage of flowers and the liquefy tool to blend the layers together, I made two different versions, one which is more elongated on the flowers and has more shadows, whereas the other a lighter and more simplified version of the image which I do not prefer.

Upon feedback in week 2 off of Adam, it made me look at the image I had created and think about a meaning behind it deeper than just surrealism in photography, this made me think of all the imagery of acid trips on the internet and how that has affected the person or the way we see the drug in public, because of the vivid colours in the piece, I thought that it would be a good idea to explore this topic further in this brief. This could also be linked to psychedelia which is also another topic that is really interesting.

After this, I decided to experiment with different tools in Photoshop and came up with my final 2 images which I am pretty pleased with their outcomes.
