Found : Final Image creation

I found some discarded receipts a plastic bag and a few energy drinks cans. I also found an Amazon package laying around my room which had flaps that could be used quite interestingly to create shadows on the objects. I thought these items would work quite well together so I photographed them all separately and got these images in the contact sheets below.ContactSheet-002ContactSheet-001ContactSheet-003

I shot the first couple of the energy drinks cans on a bright blue backdrop which I thought would work because of the contrast between the red, the silver and, the blue. I shot these couple with a two light studio set up with my external flash and a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. The colours did pop and I like the look of the images, but something just seemed fake about them, something that put me off of using the two lights and flash combination. I liked the use of three cans because there wasn’t any negative space created in the image where the eye could be led if there was either two or four.  I knew after three shots that I had to change the ‘studio’ set, which led me to try using the amazon packaging that I found lying around.

I decided that I would remove one of the lights to make the light more harsh, and directional in addition to the one studio light I used the external flash pointing it up to the ceiling to bounce off of the white to get a more even light and to fill in the shadows slightly. This works very well for the images.

Because of the way that I have shot these images little editing was needed, as seen below, they are exposed well enough to see what they are without exposure correction in CameraRAW. I have enhanced them in editing to make them more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing to my eye. I have included the three images I have decided to go with in their original form and their edited final form.

Appropriation

When I first heard about the brief I thought about doing something on fashion, creating an image of the person repeated over and over to show that fashion isn’t individual anymore. With everyone copying off of each other, stealing designs and creating the same thing with a different label. This idea seemed to work quite well but, I didn’t think this showed much of what I could do or have a high enough level for this brief or university in general.

fAshion is mass produced

I scrapped that idea after that one image I edited, I went on to google different techniques such as overpainting, and surrealism, the latter of which ended up being what these pieces are based upon. I feel that the pieces I have presented in this collection are really strong, and show the theme of surrealism really well.  Using my skills in Photoshop I have created the three images the first being made with a collage of flowers and the liquefy tool to blend the layers together, I made two different versions, one which is more elongated on the flowers and has more shadows, whereas the other a lighter and more simplified version of the image which I do not prefer.

Upon feedback in week 2 off of Adam, it made me look at the image I had created and think about a meaning behind it deeper than just surrealism in photography, this made me think of all the imagery of acid trips on the internet and how that has affected the person or the way we see the drug in public, because of the vivid colours in the piece, I thought that it would be a good idea to explore this topic further in this brief. This could also be linked to psychedelia which is also another topic that is really interesting.

After this, I decided to experiment with different tools in Photoshop and came up with my final 2 images which I am pretty pleased with their outcomes.
